Jay Electronica & Prodigy Champion Truth & Justice On “Call of Duty”

But just minutes before the clock struck midnight, Jay came through as promised with Prodigy in tow on "Call of Duty."

“I went from Myspace to the top of the food chain…”

We were beginning to think you weren’t coming, Jay. Early Monday morning Jay Electronica hit Twitter promising to deliver an explosive new song. The fan excitement gradually turned to apathy as the hours went on with no song in sight. We’ve been here before with Electronica, who’s become infamous for his sporadic song output over the last few years. But just minutes before the clock struck midnight, Jay came through as promised with Prodigy in tow on “Call of Duty.”

The content is heavy and ambitious from the beginning as Electronica has a Winston Churchill sample that calls for “truth and justice.” The New Orleans emcee then parallels his current ambition to fallen greats Pun, B.I.G. and Pac. He adds Steve Jobs and incarcerated rapper Mac as others who had similar talents. Jay also flips the criticism of his slow output by promising his album’s influence will be the equivalent of The Chronic (“Niggas call my album Detox/ Cause they know I’m finna bring The Chronic…).

The second verse has Electronica switching the focus from inward to outward reflection. Perhaps due to his newfound major label status, Electronica places himself as a unifying force between the underground and mainstream. It’s not just a musical observation; Electronica mentions his brotherhood with those across religious beliefs and sitting at tables with the financial elite. Prodigy’s ending third verse is more linear with its content of a street solider looking to escape the hood through Hip-Hop. However, it doesn’t detract from the song’s flow.

Let’s hope we don’t have to wait another 6-8 months for another Electronica track.
