Current WBC light-heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins is citing David Haye’s disappointing performance against Wladimir Klitschko earlier this month as proof he could compete at heavyweight.

Before the loss, Hopkins as adamant supporter of Haye, as both fight under Golden Boy Promotions. Hopkins went as far as to predict Haye would knock out both Klitschkos and unify the heavyweight division. Now reflecting on Haye’s defeat, Hopkins did not mince words in his criticism of Haye’s effort and failure to back up his words. In addition, Hopkins reaffirmed his desire to face Haye, an idea he all but abandoned last year after his own disappointing performance against Roy Jones, Jr.

“If you want the typical Bernard Hopkins response — He bitched, ” Hopkins told the Daily Mail. “I was shocked by him against Klitschko, You can’t trash talk the way he did for two or three years and then not deliver. I don’t like to question any fighter’s heart. But to see him go in there and then keep flopping, I would spot him 20 lbs. The heavyweight division has been in a coma for almost ten years and Haye was given the stage, the opportunity, to fight his heart out. If you do that, even if you don’t win, you can come back. But as soon as he started flopping down on his knees I knew it was over.”

Bernard Hopkins will defend his light-heavyweight crown on October 15 against Chad Dawson.
