Che “Rhymefest” Smith is convalescing at an undisclosed hospital after nearly suffering a diabetic coma from type 2 diabetes.
Rhymefest was admitted to an ER after his sugar levels were found to be at a life-threatening 739 mg. Normal blood sugar levels range from 70-100 mg.
According to a short statement released on the Chicago rapper’s Twitter, Rhymefest was unaware that he was carrying the disease.
When left untreated, uncontrolled diabetes can lead to heart disease, stroke, nerve damage, peripheral artery disease and kidney failure.
Last month, Rhymefest ended his first electoral run for the 20th Ward Alderman in Chicago. Last year, he released a revolutionary-themed sophomore album entitled El Che.
At press time, Rhymefest is awaiting medical clearance to return home.
