Newly crowned WBC welterweight titlist Victor Ortiz says a tentative contact is in place to face Floyd Mayweather on September 17 in Las Vegas.
Ortiz’s stock soared last month with an exciting, Fight of the Year worthy win over previously undefeated Andre Berto. Ortiz is signed to Golden Boy Promotions, who has represented Mayweather exclusively in his recent fights and failed negotiations to face Manny Pacquiao.
“I just need to look at the contract and make sure everything is ok,” Ortiz told the Lawrence Journal-World. “It’s not 100 percent sure yet, but that’s what I’m setting my sights on.”
Mayweather’s inactivity since defeating Shane Mosley in May 2010 has caused him to be dropped from most Pound for Pound rankings. He was in attendance at the Ortiz-Berto fight, causing many to speculate he was scouting a potential opponent if talks again fail with Pacquiao.
At press time, Mayweather has not verified any talks with Ortiz.
