MONTREAL, CANADA — Will David Lemieux’s first nationally televised U.S. appearance be a memorable war? The Canadian is training that way for next week’s (April 8 ) matchup against former champion Marco Antonio Rubio in a WBC title eliminator.
Lemieux has become one of the most exciting and talked about young fighters in the game. With a record of 25-0 (24 KOs), his momentum got stronger last year with a KO of the Year contender when he brutally dispatched Hector Camacho Jr in one round.
Despite the accolades, Lemieux claims he isn’t believing his own hype. He says Rubio will be his biggest step up in class, and a formidable foe due to Rubio’s previous encounters with the likes Kelly Pavlik and Enrique Ornelas.
“Rubio is the best opponent I have fought to date,” said Lemieux. “It is going to be interesting to see what Rubio brings to the table. He is a big puncher and has a lot more experience than I do. I am ready to give it my all and I am preparing for war.”
The victor will be the mandatory opponent for the winner of the June 4 WBC middleweight title match between titleholder Sebastian Zbik and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Ironically, Lemieux sees his opponent as the toughest competitor out of the three.
“I honestly feel that Rubio is tougher than either of the fighters I would face for the title if I win,” Lemieux said. “I am not looking past Rubio and taking it one step at a time, but I am really looking forward to making a statement with this fight and doing whatever I have to do to get a shot at the middleweight title.”
Lemieux vs. Rubio will take place from the Montreal’s Bell Centre with a start time of 11 PM ET.
