“There’s no difference whatsoever to the songs you hear on the radio and the songs that we make.”
The above quote comes from Patrice Wilson, the president of Ark Music Factory and the man responsible for Rebecca Black’s viral phenomenon “Friday.” Note that he’s also the guy who rhymes on that abomination. I must say, he has a lot of heart to show his face and let his name be associated with that debacle. But his quote does verify something me and many others have been saying for a long time, and that’s the majority of the music being pushed on the radio today is lifeless and devoid of creativity.
He’s right in saying Rebecca Black isn’t destroying music. There’s too many quality artists out there for that to happen. Commercial music is just in a very dark period and pretty much a parody of itself. You know it’s a problem when Rebecca’s “Friday” beat could easily fit on Lupe Fiasco’s Lasers, or for that matter, Wiz Khalifa’s latest project. Those old enough to remember the early 90s when House music really took off will recall Hip-Hop artists at the time incorporating 1-2 House-styled (and usually bad) tracks on their albums (De La Soul clowned that trend on De La Soul Is Dead). Now we have everyone making full albums of synthetic, safe and bland pop tunes. Someday, we’ll all look back on this period and laugh like people do the hair bands of the 80s. Let’s just hope there’s a Nirvana type act on the way soon to save us.
