Nonito Donaire’s left hook not only ended Fernando Montiel’s title reign, but gave the Mexican fighter a hairline fracture in his jaw.
The devastating blow, Donaire’s money punch, landed as a counter to a Montiel right hand. The shot left Montiel disoriented and flailing on the canvas. He was able to beat the count but was then stopped after two more shots against the ropes.
According to Dr. Benito Calderon, who treated Montiel at Las Vegas’ University Medical Center, Montiel’s injury has caused him to struggled with chewing his food. In addition, the former WBO and WBC champion is experiencing headaches and rib pain. A brain scan yielded no alarming results.
At press time, Fernando Montiel is scheduled to return back home to his native Mexico within the next two days. There is not estimated timetable for his in-ring return.
