“That’s called a first round knockout/ Now you know that I’m not playing…”
How many rappers can say they have a cosign from Freddie Foxx, a gold album, and made Fabolous back out of a Wrestlemania freestyle battle? WWE wrestler John Cena can boast to all three. Years ago, the superstar grappler had the persona of a cocky punchline rapper who ridiculed his foes with freestyle raps, and proclaimed himself the “Dr. of Thuganomics.” He moved on from that character in recent years, but last night he brought out a few bars to diss The Rock.
The storyline for this angle is The Rock returning for this year’s Wrestlemania. Being that Cena is the most popular wrestler on the roster, The Rock called out his heir apparent, essentially painting him as pretender to the throne. Cena responded in kind with his first “freestyle” diss in some time.
John Cena reportedly writes most of his own material. He won’t be confused with an LL Cool J or KRS-One when it comes to the battle raps, but he’s competent. You can see why Fabolous didn’t want to take the risk of possibly being outperformed in his own profession by a ‘rassler. He already would have been at a huge disadvantage crowd-wise battling him at a wrestling show.
Hip-Hop, especially when it comes to “beef,” has taken a WWE approach for years. It’s only fair that wrestling does some borrowing for its version of Nas vs. Jay-Z.
