Super middleweight Don “Da Bomb” George (21-1-1, 18 KOs) rebounded from his first career defeat with a first round blitz over previously unbeaten prospect Cornelius White (16-1, 15 KOs). The fight was supposed to be White’s coming out party, and instead turned into a nightmare when George countered a lazy White jab with a hard right. White got up on unsteady legs, and was summarily dropped twice more when George mauled him against the ropes with power shots.
George gets back in the win column after losing an eight round decision to Franciso Sierra on ESPN2 last July. His co-promoter, Leon Margules, hopes this will generate interest for an eventual title shot.
“This victory will put the kid right back on schedule for a world title fight,” Margules explained. “He’s a good looking kid, the son of a Chicago policeman with an exciting style. It shows what he’s made of that he’s so eager to get back into a tough fight.”
The main event proved much more tactical, as Rico Ramos (19-0, 10 KOs) used his faster hands and feet to outpoint Alejandro Valdez (23-5-3, 17 KOs). Ramos kept the fight on the outside and avoided most of Valdez’s attempts to work inside. However, Valdez did succeed in roughing Ramos up at times, and a bleeding cut over a left eye was visible in the later rounds. Final scorecards read 97-93 and 98-92 twice. Although Ramos is ranked in the Top 5 at super bantamweight by the WBO and IBF, the 23-year-old is expected to obtain more seasoning before taking a title shot.
