“This year everybody’s off the hook/ But niggas know the verses…”
The game waits for no one. Based on the recent output from Cyhi Da Prynce and Talib Kweli, both emcees understand that phrase well. Kweli just dropped his Gutter Rainbows album on January 25, and will be releasing a mixtape with DJ Smallz entitled Northern Lights X Southern Smoke. Cyhi has worked with Laws, a last week premiered an extended, Civil Rights themed video for “Ring Bellz.”
Khrysis’ beat and the chorus remain untouched, but Kweli and Cyhi provide all new lyrics. We get two verses with both artists tasking the boastful approach. As usual, Kwelis sprinkles his verse with a little more insight while his younger counterpart keeps it strictly on a hedonistic level. Cyhi might not have some convinced he has next, but the work ethic can’t be denied. And that’s always the starting point for success.
Gutter Rainbows is available now through iTunes.
