Khan Wants to Make Big Statement in McCloskey Fight

"I'm thrilled to be coming home to England to defend my title on April 16 and I promise my fans that I will give them a performance they won't forget," Khan (24-1, 17 KOs) stated.

Amir Khan plans to use his April 16 homecoming to prove that’s he’s the best junior welterweight in the world.

Khan will be fighting in his native England for the first time since December 2009, when he scored an easy 1st round KO over previously unbeaten Dmitriiy Salita. This time, Khan will face unbeaten EBU champion Paul McCloskey (22-0, 12 KOs). Just two months ago, Khan survived a late onslaught from slugger Marcos Maidana to retain his belt. Although the battle earned him Fight of the Year from  the Boxing Writer’s Association of America, Khan expects this fight to be a dominant showcase of his skills.

“I’m thrilled to be coming home to England to defend my title on April 16 and I promise my fans that I will give them a performance they won’t forget,” Khan (24-1, 17 KOs) stated.  “McCloskey is a tough contender, so I expect him to be in his best form.  I’m in my prime now and I want to make a statement in this fight and show that I am the best super lightweight in the world.”

Turning pro six years ago, Paul McCloskey is unknown outside of the UK. The most notable fighter on his record is Cesar Bazan, who’s fought and lost to name opponents such as Stevie Johnston, Miguel Cotto and Jose Luis Castillo. McCloskey says he’s not rattled by the huge step up in class, seeing Khan as a flawed fighter who’s deficiencies he can expose.

“Fighting for a world championship is a dream come true for me and I’m not about to let it go to waste,” McCloskey vowed.  “Khan is a very good fighter and I respect him, but he is beatable and I plan to do just that.  I’ve sacrificed a lot to get here and this is my time.”

Amir Khan vs. Paul McCloskey will be held at the MEN Arena. Tickets can be purchased through www.ticketmaster.co.uk or www.men-arena.com.
