Over the weekend, news broke that Hip-Hop founder Kool Herc does not have the money to pay for a needed surgery. For now, the exact ailment is undisclosed, but DJ Premier and others have spoken with Herc and confirmed he’s in need of assistance.
Herc’s fusion of culture and music (Jamaican toasting, funk records, breakbeats, breakdancing), along with popular parties at 1520 Segdwick Avenue in the Bronx, greatly contributed to Hip-Hop’s development in the early 70s. His work has him widely recognized as the creator of Hip-Hop music.
According to DJ Premier’s blog, a press release is expected later today to full disclose Herc’s situation. For those who are ready to contribute now, you can do so through paypal or by mail.
Kool Herc is trending on Twitter, and I’ve already seen a lot of people asking why millionaire rappers or labels are not covering his surgery. That’s the wrong mentality to have. Don’t worry about what others are doing with their money. Ask yourself if YOU can do anything to help out. A community takes care of its own.
