36-year-old DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley was nothing more than cannon fodder yesterday for a focused Lucas Matthysse, who scored nine knockdowns in route to an eighth round TKO.
The 28-year-old Matthysee proved too strong for Corley, and abused the 15-year veteran with constant body shots. Corley began wilting in round five, suffering two knockdowns. Another came in the sixth, and three more in both the seventh and eighth rounds.
Matthysse’s Solo Boxeo Tecate showcase brought him back to the winner’s circle after losing a close decision to Zab Judah in November. In that HBO fight, Matthysse floored and hurt Judah in the 10th.
DeMarcus Corley, who’s battled both Floyd Mayweather and Judah in competitive matches in the early 2000s, and last year against feared power-puncher Marcos Maidana, is 1-5 in his last six bouts (37-16-1, 22 KOs).
The win improves Matthysse’s record to 28-1, with 26 KOs.
