“Do you want a pretty lie/ Or the ugly truth?
Lord knows Joe Budden has had enough experiences with women to write a few Steve Harvey-styled books for the Hip-Hop generation. But why spend 200-300 pages talking about what can be summed up in 3-4 minutes? Budden’s first installment of “Ordinary Love Shit” had many men saying “amen” at the truthfulness of his words over Sade’s “No Ordinary Love.” For this edition, he pulls inspiration from “Cherish the Day,” one of the many gems off Sade’s magnum opus, Love Deluxe.
With all the oozing sensuality from Sade’s voice, there’s always an air of sadness in her music. This again provides a perfect backdrop for Budden’s emotional musings on the difficulties he finds in dealing with the insecurities of his woman. He fights unapologetically to maintain his individuality, and not lose himself completely in the relationship as many women are prone to do.
No third party to ruin our plan/ I hate for you to be that girl/ Too consumed with her man/ So I want you to have your own plans/ You to have your own ends/ You to have your own life/ you to have your own friends
Budden brings up his own fears, the most poignant being the pain of how his ex keeps his son from him. Furthermore, he delves into the past tricks that he’s abandoned in favor of making his current relationship work. The fadeout suggests we have a third installment coming. It’d be nice to end it on a hopeful note, even though that’s not the normal Budden M.O. If he does decide to do that, Sade’s “I Couldn’t Love You More” would be perfect.
