Troubled rapper G-Dep has confessed to a botched 1993 robbery that left a 32-year-old man dead.

G-Dep (Trevell Coleman), made the revelation to investigators after arriving unsolicited at the New York’s 25th Precinct. According to Coleman, he approached the victim, John Henkel, on a bike outside of the James Weldon Johnson projects in East Harlem. Henkel attempted to resist G-Dep’s robbery attempt, resulting in the then 18-year-old future emcee shooting him three times in the chest with a .40 caliber handgun.

Henkel died shortly afterward, despite attempts to revive him at St. Luke’s Hospital. The case went completely cold, due to no witnesses, and G-Dep disposing of the murder weapon in the East River.Dectectives at New York’s 23rd Precinct, where the murder occurred, were able to match up G-Dep’s story with case facts.

His attorney, Michael Alperstein, would not comment on his client’s admission of guilt.

“My client is presumed innocent, and the case is going to the grand jury,” Alperstein told the New York Post.

In the early 2000’s, G-Dep was signed to Bad Boy, releasing the popular singles “Let’s Get It” and “Special Delivery,” and one album, 2001’s Child of the Ghetto. After being dropped, he fell back into crime and drugs. According to the New York Post, he’s been arrested over 25 times since 2003.

At press time, G-Dep is being held without bail.

G-Dep has been in a downward spiral for a long time. It makes you wonder if the guilt from this crime drove him into drug use. New York is very tough on crime period, let alone murder. I believe he’ll face 25 to life in prison even if he pleads guilty. I’m wondering if his attorney will try to get this reduced to manslaughter, arguing that G-Dep’s intention was robbery and not premeditated murder. The fact he’s being held without bail isn’t a good sign for him.

Regardless, a human being is no longer on this earth because of him. That warrants a steep punishment, and I commend him for coming to terms with it, and now being ready to face the consequences of his actions. This sadly reminds me on an interview a good friend of mine, Ms. Drama, did with G-Dep a few years back. She broke with standard interview etiquette, and was really trying to reach out and get him off the destructive path he was going down. A sad end for G-Dep.
