I used to always look forward to John Ruiz fights. Not because I enjoyed Ruiz’s horrible punch and hold style, but due to his colorful, over the top trainer Norman “Stoney” Stone. The guy had words for everyone, whether it was the promoters, the referee, or even when he deemed his own fighter slacking off (“You got to fight this fucking guy!”). If John Ruiz fought like his trainer talked and acted, he’d have been the most popular American heavyweight of the last decade. When you watch some of this footage, you can’t help but think Stone could’ve had a career as a manager in professional wrestling. It really rings true in the last clip, where he snatches the belt from an opponent and lifts it above his head like he’s The Rock (Stone earned a slap for his troubles).
