“She can’t clean, but I bet she has a vacuum mouth…”
Between the three boxing cards this weekend (Tarver-Aguilera, Bute-Brinkley and Klitschko-Briggs), I nearly missed when Kanye West dropped his G.O.O.D. Friday offering on Saturday afternoon. For this jam session format, ‘Ye adds Keri Hilson to the usual cast of G.O.O.D. Music cohorts in Pusha T and Cyhi Da Prynce.
The concept is just what every man thought when reading the title; dealing with a physically underwhelming woman so your man can bag her considerably more attractive friend. Kanye goes on a fun little rant about hating baby pictures and people’s faulty house cleaning habits. Pusha T complains about his boy tricking him with a subpar female on a double date (“Nigga hit the switcheroo on my black ass”). Cyhi has the funniest one of them all, rhyming with pride about how he deceived labelmate Big Sean into playing wingman to a female described, in sports terms, as a “fifth stringer” off the bench.
Keri Hilson gets a mid-song solo that doesn’t add much to the track. With the beatbox-based production, her voice is more grating that complimentary. Also, the beat rides out for around two minutes after the verses. We’ve seen Kanye do this before with singers like Charlie Wilson and Bon Iver. But with just ‘Ye just chanting, it amounts to nothing more than unnecessary filler.
“Take One for the Team” is one of the lower quality G.O.O.D. Music offerings, but it’s still funny enough to warrant a few listens. Think of it as a better executed version of the comedy attempted on the head-scratching “Drunk N Hot Girls” off 2007’s Graduation.
Kanye seems to have realized the track wasn’t completely satisfactory, so he also dropped the banned artwork for his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy LP. Check it out after the song links.
