Former middleweight championship challenger Antwun Echols (32-15-4, 28 KOs) possibly had his final bout last Saturday (October 2) against Joey Spina (26-1-2, 18 KOs). Echols, who twice fought Bernard Hopkins in entertaining fights in 1999 and 2000, was pummeled around the ring and stopped in the 3rd round. Echols has gone 1-6 in his last seven bouts, losing five by stoppage. As you’ll see below, the 38-year-old Echols was being hurt by nearly every shot Spina threw.
Echols was never going to be a world-beater, but this is a glimpse of the fate many fighters have. It’s far removed FROM the big lights, and most of the time fans forget about them once they’re off TV. No one can convince a fighter to hang up the gloves, but I hope Echols takes a hard, long look at this bout before deciding whether he’ll continue on.
