Shane Mosley was defiant yesterday (September 20) in telling fans and critics who urge retirement that he is far from done with boxing.
After Saturday night’s (September 18) abysmal draw against Sergio Mora, many people noted Mosley’s inability to land hard punches on his opponent despite cornering him several times against the ropes. Mosley’s trainer Naazim Richardson noted this repeatedly and pleaded with Mosley to pick up the pace.
The speculation in the boxing community is not that Mosley simply didn’t follow directions, but that the 39-year-old former champion no longer has the ability to pull the trigger. Mosley sees this opinion for retirement as “stupid” and illogical. For him, the fight’s low quality was due to Mora constantly backpedaling and refusing to engage. In addition, Mosley was adamant that retirement will not be an option until someone KOs him.
“All the people that say I should retire can forget it, stop tweeting that you sound stupid please you saw what happen,” Mosley defended in Twitter comments to concerned fans. “I have no explanation, it’s crazy. He fought to make it an ugly and I tried to make it a real fight. Please when I get knock the fuck out than I will be looking at the front door lol…”
One fighter ready to do that is WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto. HBO, who has aired all of their fights, has pushed for Berto-Mosley over the last two years. Both had signed on to face each other in January, but Berto was forced to withdraw at the last minute due to losing nearly 10 family members in the Haiti earthquake. In the summer, renewed talks failed, allegedly because Berto sought an equal purse split.
In a viral clip outside a nightclub, Berto advised that ideally he’d like to face Shane Mosley or Miguel Cotto next.
At press time, Mosley has not responded to Berto’s challenge
