Because they are the biggest fishes out there when it comes to covering boxing, cable networks are under a lot of scrutiny from fans regarding the decisions they make. Sometimes, the criticism is more than warranted. Other times, the networks themselves get caught in the middle of ego-pissing contests between fighters (see the latest aborted Mayweather-Pacquiao negotiations).
But the networks do get it right sometimes. And normally when they do, it’s a home run.
Take this latest short trailer from HBO, hyping their late night staple Boxing After Dark. In just a few minutes, they’re able to convey the emotion, sacrifice, pain and hard work that goes into being a professional fighter. It’s a point they struggled to get across before when they’ve used fighters like Chad Dawson in speaking clips.
