Atlanta singer Fantasia Barrino was rushed to a Charlotte hospital last night (August 9) after overdosing on aspirin and a sleep aid.
The news was confirmed in a statement from the American Idol winner’s manager Brian Dickens. According to Dickens, his client overdosed the same day she was given a court complaint from Paula Cook, who accused the singer of wrecking her marriage through a year-long affair with her husband Antwuan Cook.
The accusation is part of Ms. Cook’s child custody case. The complaint further details that Barrino began the affair in August 2009 and made a sex tape with her husband.
Brian Dickens confirmed the affair, but maintained that his client had no malicious intent in her actions. In a statement released to CNN, Dickens explained that Mr. Cook led Fantasia to believe he was separated from his spouse and on the verge of a divorce.
“Fantasia is heartbroken and is sorry for any pain she may have caused. Yesterday, she was totally overwhelmed by the lawsuit and the media attention,” read the statement. “Fantasia believed Mr. Cook when he told her he was not happy in his marriage and his heart was not in it. She believed him when he told her and Mrs. Cook separated in the late summer of 2009. She believed Mr. Cook when he told her he lived elsewhere.”
At press time, Fantasia is in stable condition.
Her third studio album Back to Me is scheduled to be released on August 24th.

Fantasia must’ve really been devastated, embarrassed, and overwhelmed by this event for her to try to commit suicide. I wish for her to have a speedy recovery and for her to realize that she has a daughter that’s looking up to her that needs to be sent on a positive path for now on.
