Members of the Dungeon Family have confirmed that Goodie Mob member Khujo has been released from prison.
Khujo, real name Willie Knighton, Jr, had been incarcerated since June 9 after being convicted of one count of drug possession for marijuana, and three counts of felony possession of a firearm. These charges occured this year and in 2009.
As disclosed by Big Boi and Cee-Lo, Khujo was facing up to 2 years in prison for the convictions. The extended sentence was due to a previous firearm conviction in 1990. But the rapper’s lawyer, Daniel Kane, was able to successfully uncover an error in the prosecution’s case.
“He had a case in 1990 when he was a teenager that was disposed of under the First Offender Act. If you enter a plea under the First Offender Act you are not formally adjudicated guilty,” Kane explained to Atlanta’s Creative Loafing. “The mistake was that they thought he was a convicted felon because they thought he was convicted in 1990. So I went back into the archives and got the 1990 case, researched it, pulled the records and presented them to the district attorney and the judge in Henry County and said he could never be a felon in possession of a firearm — there were three counts — because he was never a convicted felon. It was a first offender case, and the court agreed.”
Khujo, who can be heard on the chorus of “Tangerine” off Big Boi’s new solo (Sir Lucious Leftfoot: The Return of Chico Dusty), was in the midst of working on a reunion Goodie Mob album. The group began their comeback last year with show closing appearance on the nationally-televised BET Hip Hop Awards in Atlanta.
Khujo had also begun to establish himself as a solo artist, releasing a concept Afro-punk album called Georgiavania under the name WILLIE ISZ with Jneiro.
Khujo’s Dungeon Family friends were very pleased with the legal victory.
“Give thanks! We just got Khujo out of jail,” fellow Goodie Mob member Cee-Lo wrote on his Twitter. “They can’t stop what God has planned. Might DF! The Four Horsemen ride again.”
“The Mob did it! Shouts out to Big Boi,” Goodie member Big Gipp said. “We brought Khujo home today. The man not the dog will sleep in his bed tonight.”
Khujo is scheduled to have a final sentence hearing on August 3.
