Despite suffering a bleeding, head butt induced cut above the right eye in the first round, Shane Mosley stopped Patrick Lopez in the 10th and final round of an exhibition bout in Panama.
With Lopez being a southpaw, Mosley elected to make the bout a counter-punching contest at mid-range. Even at the age of 44, Mosley held the speed advantage and began pressing the bout in round two following a ringside doctor check at his dripping cut. A lead left hook from Mosley dropped Lopez and had him on unsteady legs for the remainder of the stanza.
As the bout progressed, the contest took on a slower pace with more clinching and mauling. Mosley used these rounds to conserve energy while Lopez failed to land any significant punch to make the future Hall of Famer pay for his low output.
In the final round’, both men were willing to exchange and the lighter-punching Lopez got the worst of it. A left hook put him down in the first minute, and another lead shot sent him toppling to the floor. The final knockdown came courtesy o repeated left and right hooks that forced the referee stoppage.
Mosley improves to 49-9 (41 KOs). The win was Mosley’s seond victory of 2015, following an August sixth stoppage of Ricardo Mayorga.
