Robert Guerrero’s big title opportunity against Floyd Mayweather may possibly be in jeopardy following an arrest this morning at Kennedy Airport for gun possession.
According to law enforcement statements to the NY Post, Guerrero was booked after attempting to bring an unloaded, .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun on board Delta flight 1429 to Las Vegas.
Although Guerrero has not released an official statement, an unnamed source for the fighter explained the arrest as stating “media knows he is a hunter and requested he bring the weapon for a photo op.” Additional sources state Guerrero is registered to legally carry a firearm in his native California but has no license for New York.
Guerrero is scheduled to challenge Floyd Mayweather on May 4 for the WBC welterweight title.

If this turns out to be true, this has to be one of the most idiotic things a boxer has done in a long time. Who tries to bring a gun on a plane? Even before 9/11 that wasn’t going down. Nowadays, you can’t even bring eye contact solution or a bottle of lotion over a certain size as a carry-on.
The problem with Guerrero’s supposed explanation is that if he had notified that airport officials earlier like he claimed, they would have informed him that he couldn’t bring the weapon and would need to make other arrangements. The fact he was arrested implies he or someone on his team tried to smuggle it on there.
I seriously doubt this compromises the fight, as there’s too much money at stake, but Guerrero’s “good guy” rep (or better yet his common sense rep), takes a serious hit with this one. I’m sure Mayweather will be having a field day with this one in the coming days.
