Common’s “Celebrate” finds him and friends in a festive mood one day before the official release of The Dreamer/The Believer. Is it just me, or does the abundance of “nigga” and “bitch” in the chorus take away from the elegance of this track?

“This the raw right here!”

Common gets back in touch with his harder stret side on location in Haiti for the new video “Sweet.” Being that this track lambasts soft and singing rappers, it’s highly ironic that the video comes the same week as Drake’s Take Care. The spirit of competition is always alive in elite emcees. Com’s new album The Dreamer/The Believer drops in December.

“I’m the franchise so I rock my own chain…”

Being that it is close to 20 years ago, people tend to forget that Common, then called Common Sense, was an emcee that could talk trash and deliver battle rhymes with the best of them. For whatever reason, Common was in the mood to remind everyone with this new, No I.D. produced heater of a single “Sweet.” The title is aimed at soft rappers who speed more time imitating “Frank Sinatra” than actual rapping. No I.D. has a soulful, melodic sample loop of the words “you’re so sweet,” surrounding it with slashing cymbals effects and funky guitar licks. Common’s rhymes make a few nods to prime KRS-One’s flow in the second verse, and pretty much lets everyone know not to be fooled by his mostly positive content and post Erykah Badu fashion choices. “Sweet” is the perfect harder, B-side to a track like “Blue Sky.”

Common’s video for his excellent single “Blue Sky” focuses on residents in an apartment building pursuing their individual talents (writer, athlete, dancer, painter, singer etc.). This track will be on his upcoming album The Dreamer/The Believer.
