Today marks the release date of Nottz’s new EP In My Mind. The project is notable for pairing Nottz’s own formidable production skills with some of the culture’s best beatsmith’s in Pete Rock and Alchemist. On the emcee end, Pusha T, Asher Roth, Black Milk and Royce da 5’9 fill out the proceedings. If you like what you hear, make sure to support with your dollars.

Here’s yet another example that there’s two sides to every story. OGs like 9th Wonder sided with Pete Rock when Lupe’s “T.R.O.Y.” sampling ”Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)” dropped earlier this week. After getting branded as a beat thief, Lupe tells his side of what happened. According to Lupe, he reached out to Pete back in November and got his blessing to rework the track.

The biggest thing that stuck out to me about this interview is when Lupe admitted that it was actually his team that reached out to Pete months ago, not himself. Their first conversation about the song was this week! I’m sure Lupe trusts his squad, but a lot can be lost in translation when you use middlemen, something he shouldn’t have done for such a risky move. Reworking “T.R.O.Y.” is like remaking “Mass Appeal” or “Nuthin’ But a G Thang.”

You decide who you believe. For now, Pete Rock has not released a response.

Lyricism is already ostracized in mainstream Hip-Hop, but what if it was flat-out illegal? That’s the creative angle Torae utilizes with his video for “That Raw,” produced by Pete Rock. Directed by Brian Robinson, the video has three separate vignettes showing a dystopian future of the culture. The first has Torae selling his lyrics like a hustler on the corner complete with fortune cookie-like paper slips of his rhymes. The second clip finds our protagonist working out of warehouse akin to the Carter complex from New Jack City. The final scene won’t be spoiled here.

“That Raw” is found on Toare’s debut album For the Record in physical and digital formats. The re-released double-vinyl version includes a new 9th Wonder-produced track entitled “Only Way.”

A Memphis Bleek sighting! Jay-Z’s right hand man lends his support to Pete Rock and Smif N Wessun’s new “Top of the World” video, found on their collaborative album Monumental. The video is directed by Donald Robinson Cole and Olise Forel for SMP and Moving Silence.

Blu has the tendency to get too experimental with some of his beats (see No York). But on this track, Pete Rock’s searing mood music fits him just right. We’re still waiting on the Below the Heavens sequel with Exile, but this collaboration will also began calls for Blu to get something together with Pete. This could be mixed a lot better, but would it be Blu if it was?

Torae debuted this track live on the first day of Atlanta’s A3C Festival last Thursday. Today, Torae drops the Pete Rock banger as a free download. The track will be a part of Torae’s For the Record LP which drops on November 1. The album will also include production from DJ Premier, !llmind, Nottz, 9th Wonder, Marco Polo, Large Professor, Khrysis, Buckwild and Diamond. After hearing the album sampler, I can tell this album will be worth the purchase.

Need a tour of New York City? Call on Pete Rock and Smif N Wessun, who take the role of hi-jacking bus tour guides in this video for “Monumental.” It only takes a few minutes before the tourists’ heads start nodding. You can purchase the full-length album via iTunes.

Don’t you just love it when artists pick their best tracks for singles and videos? Pete Rock and Smif N Wessun evidently noticed the huge online response for their leak a few weeks back of “That’s Hard.” Although the video is simple and forgettable, the song itself is not. You can purchase their new album via iTunes.

“If it wasn’t for Herc or Bam we wouldn’t have it…”

Today, Pete Rock and Smif N Wessun are offering this title track from their upcoming album as an 99. cent iTunes download. Pete’s sample choice has blaxploitation/70′s soul elements courtesy of the violin centered main melody, and the short, squealing horns refrains. It’s a slow-moving track that fits well with the deliberate, moderate pace that Smif N Wessun usually exhibit with their flows. Pete’s strength has never been his vocals. Despite being the last emcee to rhyme, Pete’s montone, flat voice luckily doesn’t hurt the song much.

Monumental will be available on June 28.

“I remember when the bars was hard/ Now rap cats play guitars/ Singing songs for broads…”

If you were wondering how Pete Rock would mesh with Smif N Wessun, “That’s Hard” will dispel any reservations. The violin sample Pete uses gives the production a noticeable early RZA feel, but more uptempo and lively. We know what Styles P’s definition of what hard is. He uses the track to detail how religion and Five Percent philosophy wasn’t enough to deter his street life and outlook on spiritual retribution. Sean Price keeps the street edge, but like Smif N Wessun here, touches on his problems with the lack of quality in some of today’s artists. Since Pete Rock is also working on an album with DJ Premier, it’s no surprise to hear him adopting Primo’s signature vocal scratches to close out the track. The Monumental album is due in stores on June 24.
