I must admit, when I first saw the title for this my immediate thought was “bad idea.” Nas had done such an excellent job with the original that I believed any cover attempt would come off corny. Nina B pleasantly surprised me with their woman-centered rendition of the Life Is Good gem, complete with her own first person narrative of self-discovery. Like the original, Nina B illuminates her own shortcomings while closing on a triumphant note. In her own words:

Nas has always been such a big  influence on my career in so many ways, meeting him a while back reaffirmed why  I love painting portraits with words.

Minutes before taking this picture for  BET, Nas gave me advice which would be the proverbial polish to my diamond/gift.  He told me to write from the heart and not from the head; besides “The heart  knows more about beats, the head recalls events, but heart recreates the moments  feeling.” Listening to “Daughters” vividly brought me back to that moment and  this is what I recorded—enjoy!

This track will be on Nina B’s upcoming collaboration project with DJ Jazzy Joyce, called Titles Are Played Out, which drops August 21.

Nas’ daughter Destiny Jones gets a starring role in his anticipated video for “Daughters.” The clip takes a first-person POV of her life from birth through her teenage years. From her perspective, we see the good and the bad; birthdays, watching her Dad record music and mack women, her first drug experimentation and reprimands from her father. Nas’ Life Is Good album drops on July 17.

When a great emcee uses their personal lives for their art, great things are bound to happen. Look no further than Nas’ latest Life Is Good leak “Daughters,” an exceptional narrative on his struggles and joys raising a teenage daughter. The song pulls heavily from an embarrassing episode last year when Nas’ real life daughter Destiny was acting out on Twitter and Instagram. While this isn’t the first time Nas has discussed home life issues, it’s the first time Destiny has been the starring subject. What makes this such an effective song is how Nas ties her problems to his own missteps (some continued) as a parent. Destiny likely isn’t thrilled by this song, but one thing she can never doubt when listening to it is that her father loves her deeply.

When adding in Nas’ work over No ID’s “Ghetto Dreams” last year, it’s fair to say these two are magic in the booth. We know Premier is still waiting, but the idea of a Nas album executive-produced by No ID sounds tastier by the day.
