I must admit, when I first saw the title for this my immediate thought was “bad idea.” Nas had done such an excellent job with the original that I believed any cover attempt would come off corny. Nina B pleasantly surprised me with their woman-centered rendition of the Life Is Good gem, complete with her own first person narrative of self-discovery. Like the original, Nina B illuminates her own shortcomings while closing on a triumphant note. In her own words:

Nas has always been such a big  influence on my career in so many ways, meeting him a while back reaffirmed why  I love painting portraits with words.

Minutes before taking this picture for  BET, Nas gave me advice which would be the proverbial polish to my diamond/gift.  He told me to write from the heart and not from the head; besides “The heart  knows more about beats, the head recalls events, but heart recreates the moments  feeling.” Listening to “Daughters” vividly brought me back to that moment and  this is what I recorded—enjoy!

This track will be on Nina B’s upcoming collaboration project with DJ Jazzy Joyce, called Titles Are Played Out, which drops August 21.

The latest Hip-Hop cover from pop singer Neon Hitch is Waka Flocka’s ”No Hands.” The video plays in reverse as she frolics down the NYC streets after escaping a bondage/fetish session. She hasn’t officially hooked up with any Hip-Hop artists, but these covers are a good audition as any, especially considering the Euro pop sound of most radio singles these days.

Goapele is looking radiant in this just-released cover for October 25′s Break of Dawn. The project’s tracklist will be finalized next week. If you missed it, you can check out the video for the first single “Play” HERE.

If she keeps this up, dance-pop singer Neon Hitch may want to consider switching genres. The English singer is back on the streets of NYC with yet another Hip-Hop cover, this time of Kreayshawn’s ”Gucci Gucci.” I’m not fond of the original, but I like the minimalist, heavy bass backdrop Hitch uses with this cover. Vocally, I prefer her natural voice over her nasal inflections when attempting to rhyme. If you missed it, here’s a link to last month’s cover of Wiz Khalifa’s “On My Level.” I’m noticing appearance-wise a lot of these girls come off like Amy Winehouse’s daughters.

With the assistance of director Trevor Cox, English pop singer Neon Hitch took to the streets of NYC to record this cover of Wiz Khalifa’s “On My Level.” The beat knocks more on the original, but Hitch has a strong enough voice to carry the sparse instrumentation of her interpretation. Considering the blurring of dance-pop and mainstream/radio Hip-Hop production in recent years, it wouldn’t be surprising if these two linked up for an original piece. You can get more info on Neon Hitch via her official site http://www.neonhitch.net.

Lauryn Hill celebrated Bob Marley week last night (May 12) by performing two classics from the music icon’s catalogue, “Could You Be Loved” and “Chances Are.” It’s not the best outfit, but Lauryn looks a lot more normal than she has in recent years, which is a good sign. More importantly, she sounds better. I’m not getting my hopes up about a new album, but now is a good a time as any for L-Boogie to get a project out there.

This month marked the 17th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s passing. Regarding Nirvana covers, most people gravitate towards “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Come As You Are.” The rap duo RedLand threw a curveball by reinterpreting “In Bloom.” They use the chrous to fuel a narrative on the aimless who derive their behavior from the hollow images of popular culture. People tend to forget that the best cover songs are never a line by line copy of the original. This is where RedLand succeeds. I’ll definitely be on the look out for their future work.
