GLASGOW, SCOTLAND — Before his Scottish countrymen, Ricky Burns successfully defended his WBO lightweight crown for the second time with two crushing knockdowns in route to a fourth round TKO stoppage over Kevin Mitchell.
After a mostly tactical first round that heated up in the final moments, Burns began to land his right hand with authority by the second. Mitchell would suffer the first knockdown in the fourth from a short counter left hook. Burns followed up his advantage with several overhand rights for the second knockdown. The finish came with Mitchell trapped against the ropes and unable to find off Burns hooks, prompting the referee stoppage.
Burns improves to 35-2 (10 KOs) while Mitchell falls to 33-2 (24 KOs)
