Count WBA junior welterweigt champion Amir Khan among those not overly impressed with Kell Brook’s blood and guts victory over Carson Jones this past Saturday. Khan and Brook have become hometown rivals of sorts in recent years with Brook pressing him hard for a grudge match. Khan has continually dismissed him as unworthy and went as far earlier this year to accuse Brook of using cocaine.
Although Brook dug deep to push back Jones, Khan informed me that Brook still has much work to do before they’ll ever face off.
He needs to fight some big names. Maybe then the fight [between us] can happen. At the moment I’m fighting world-class fighters and campaigning in America while he’s been at home. In the future a fight could be big in America. I don’t think it makes any sense fighting him in American now because nobody knows him. When I beat him people would think ‘who’s this guy?’ I don’t think he’d sell over here either. Maybe in the future when he fights guys in America and recognized in the Top 10.
Brook appears to be doing just that by targeting Hector Saldivia in what will be a title eliminator for Randall Bailey’s newly won IBF welterweight title. Bailey is currently set to defend against Devon Alexander on September 8.
Should Brook get his IBF title shot and win, Khan might be enticed enough to make his welterweight debut a UK showdown.
