Long-time readers of this site will recall DaVinci’s work off the strength of his 2010 debut, The Day the Turf Stood Still. For 2011, DaVinci has an EP and sophomore album planned. But first, he’s hitting listeners with a communal reinterpretation of Kanye West’s “Blame Game.”

Producer Al Jieh flips the same dreamy sample with subtle new bells and whistles in the background melodies. Lyrically, DaVinci lyrics focuses on the “blame game” that keeps neighborhoods in cycles of poverty and violence. It’s a completely different take from Ye’s focus on relationship issues (read: Amber Rose).

“Society blames the government for their problems – poverty, homelessness, gentrification, unemployment, drug abuse – yet, the government blames society for these same issues,” he explained regarding the song’s central concept.

DaVinci’s Feast Or Famine EP is set to drop this spring. His sophomore album, The MOEna Lisa, is expected to hit stores this summer.

The Wire has been done for years, but my man Idris Elba will forever get props for his work on my favorite all-time TV series. I call this a video trailer simply because it’s a monologue intro for Monch’s upcoming W.A.R. (We Are Renegades) album, which drops on March 22. I got my hands on a preview copy of the album, and I think longtime Monch fans will be happy. Elba does music himself, so I’m surprised he didn’t drop a verse. FYI, the snippet at the end is the LP’s title track, which features Immortal Technique. The video is directed by Todd Angkasuwan.

W.A.R. (We Are Renegades) also features appearances from Jean Grae, Jill Scott, Styles P, Vernon Reid, Phonte, Diamond D, Exile, Mr. Porter and Royce da 5’9.

“Clapping at all you niggas imitating Sammy Gravano”

The tight budgets of the music industry have dried up the ability to do those extravagant Hip-Hop videos we used to see in the 90s. That doesn’t mean videos are still important; visuals can enhance and bring new life to what would otherwise just be a routine track. Rick Ross is conscious of this, which is why he focuses on releasing multiple street videos for his mixtapes. The latest in his assembly line concept is ”10 Bricks” off of Ashes to Ashes.

This clip is pretty straightforward, even cliched with the jewelry and car shots. It’s to be expected when you keep in mind the song title. Birdman isn’t known for acumen as an emcee, and his verse here won’t change your mind. On Ross’ end, you can see from the above quote he’s continuing his fascination with all things La Cosa Nostra. Expect all least one more video from this project.

Co-stars Christian Bale and Melissa Leo won Best Supporting Academy Awards tonight (February 27) for their work in The Fighter.

Bale was a heavy favorite after winning a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in January. Leo beat out co-star Amy Adams for her Oscar win.

The Fighter is a biopic based on the life of retired boxer Micky Ward, remembered by fans for his classic trilogy with the late Arturo Gatti. Bale plays Dicky Eklund, Micky’s older brother and trainer. A former boxer himself who once fought Sugar Ray Leonard, Eklund struggles with a crack addiction that has him at odds with his family. Leo plays Alice Ward, the controlling boxing manager and matriarch of the Eklund/Ward clan.

The Fighter was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The Oscar wins are the first for both Bale and Leo.

Looking for more Blu in 2011? One of the West Coast’s best is ready to oblige you. This summer Blu’s dropping a major label project called No York, with production and collaborations from J*Davey, Bilal, Sa-Ra, Exile, Flying Lotus and Madlib. After that, he plans on releasing the very long-awaited follow-up album with Exile. For the record, it won’t be called Below the Heavens 2.

I had the pleasure of meeting Blu a few years back, and I can say he’s one of the most easy-going and humble guys in the industry. For all the acclaim, he’s kept his ego in control and remained focused on the quality of his art above anything else.

This is part 1 of an in-depth interview conducted by Nick Barili for www.hardknock.tv.

(LAS VEGAS, NV) Miguel Acosta’s (28-4-2, 22 KOs) early brilliance was not enough to stop an unwavering Brandon Rios (27-0, 20 KOs), who marched back from an early deficit to score three knockdowns and a 10th round TKO.

Early on, Acosta had a decided edge by using handspeed and movement. The 34-year-old, WBA champion punctuated most of his attacks with looping, counter right hooks that caught Rios behind the guard. The challenger did good body work when he did get inside, but Acosta’s punches were more consistent and eye-catching.

The fourth round was Acosta’s best. The champion hurt Rios repeatedly with right and left hooks mixed to the head and body. For the first and only time, Rios was in retreat. He staged a mini-rally in the last 30 seconds, but still lost the round by a huge margin.

Instead of a death knell, Brandon Rios used that disastrous fourth round as a wake-up call. He began crowding Acosta in the fifth and forcing exchanges. He caught the champion several times with short left hooks. In round six, the momentum fully swung to Rios when he dropped Acosta with a short left jab.

Acosta was still lucid, but his resolve had wilted. For the remainder of the fight, the snap and power was absent from his punches. In every exchange, the younger Rios got the better of it. With his legs gone, Acosta against tasted the canvas in round eight, this time off a left hook after being trapped against the ropes.

The coup de grace came in the 10th, when Acosta again found himself pushed into the ropes. He made a final stand that consisted of power punches in name only; all of Acosta’s strength had evaporated and relegated his offense to arm punches. Rios landed two overhand rights to secure his third knockdown, prompting the disposed champion’s corner to stop the contest.

While his promoter Bob Arum talked of bigger fights, newly crowned WBA lightweight champion proclaimed his willingness to face anyone in his division.

“I’m ready for anyone in the 135 pound division, whoever Bob Arum puts in my way…bring ’em on,” Rios said.

“This young man is going to be a superstar,” a beaming Arum added.

(GRAND ISLAND, NE) Antonio DeMarco (25-2-1, 18 KOs) defeated a game but limited Reyes Sanchez (20-4-1, 11 KOs) in the undercard lightweight bout. DeMarco landed the cleaner and harder punches throughout, but was continually rattled by Sanchez’s unorthodox aggression and volume punching. The final scorecards were unanimous for DeMarco with scores of 116-112, 117-111 and 115-113.

It’s no secret that Eminem does a fair share of writing for his mentor Dr. Dre. What is more murky is what writing he has done, or continues to do, for other artists in the industry. Outside of Canibus accusing Em of penning LL Cool J’s “The Ripper Strikes Back,” it hasn’t been a topic of concern amongst Hip-Hop heads. But with this new  leak, it’s a good bet that Marshall Mathers is dabbling in some side work for his southern peers.

The beat screams Houston, Texas, and even sports a screwed-out chorus. The first verse is about “candy paint” and “riding clean,” exactly the talk you’d expect from someone like Slim Thug or Paul Wall, not Slim Shady. The last verse starts with Bun B inflections before Em goes into his more familiar flows and content.

Strange track all-around. Em references himself in the last verse (“Is Pretty Marshall gonna have to choke me a bitch?”), so we at least know that verse is from his point of view. Nontheless, it’s still interesting to hear him tackle this type of style.

TULSA, OKLAHOMA – Featherweight prospect Juan Carlos Burgos (26-1, 19 KOs) made short work of Frankie Archuleta (27-8-1, 14 KOs) earlier tonight with a 2nd round KO at the Million Dollar Elm Casino.

Archuleta’s downfall began with Burgos unraveled him with an overhand right. Archuleta was completely spun around and dropped by a follow-up left hook. Archuleta’s legs were unstable, and he soon met the canvas again from a jab-straight right.  The end was near, and Archuleta’s night was finished when a left hook brought him to his knees for a third knockdown.

On the undercard , super-middleweight Maxim Vlasov (19-1, 10 KOs) suffered his first defeat at the hands of Isaac Chilemba (16-1-1, 8 KOs). The close bout was decided in round eight when Chilemba scored two crucial knockdowns despite a strong late-round rally from Vlasov. Final scorecards read 95-94 and 96-92 twice. Simpiwe Vetyeka (22-1, 13 KOs) scored a 3rd round KO over Roberto CarlosLeyva (27-13-1, 21 KOs) off a left hook to the liver.

“I just heard this CD by Anthony David, who’s an R&B guy- I put him on there. That’s brand new, so I’m kind of enjoying that a lot now.” – First Lady Michelle Obama

In previous administrations, a First Lady cosign on an R&B/soul artist wouldn’t mean much. Let’s face it, you’re not copping anything based on what Laura Bush or Hillary Clinton recommends. Bill Clinton, maybe. Now First Lady Michelle Obama, something just tells me she’s just a little more trendy than her predecessors. And I can cosign her judgement of talent with this latest release mixtape release from Anthony David, The Sound of Love.

This tape is composed by the Superfriends (DJ Drama, DJ Mars and DJ Doc) and combines old favorites, new exclusives and remixes from David’s catalogue. If you aren’t up to speed on David, here’s your best chance. Shout out to DJ Rahdu and his blog www.bamalovesoul.com for posting the original link.
